    Thermage

Many dermatologists and doctors use the thermage procedure to firm loose skin.  The goal is to cause the deepest layers of the skin to contract to tighten jowls and elevate eyebrows.  This unique technology does not require a laser light that would need to get through the surface of the skin.  Instead, thermage uses electrical impulses that gently heat the undersurface of the skin while largely avoiding the visible surface skin.

MultiPass Thermage

The new improved MultiPass Thermage procedure – which became available in 2006 – enhances safety and effectiveness.  When thermage was first developed, doctors treated patients using a single pass of the device at high energy levels.  Now, doctors make multiple passes at lower energies.  This change has resulted in much higher levels of patient comfort and satisfaction with the results.

One word of advice:  If you are speaking to a friend who has undergone thermage, ask whether he/she had the new MultiPass Thermage or the original single pass, high energy procedure.  Much of the information about the older procedure is irrelevant if you are considering the new MultiPass Thermage.  Remember, the new MultiPass technique is much more comfortable and more effective.

Who Would Benefit from Thermage?

Patients wary of facial plastic surgery often select thermage as the next best alternative.  Although a face lift achieves more dramatic results, thermage has two major benefits: No down time/recovery period whatsoever, and only minimal discomfort.  Shrinkage of the treated areas occurs over a six month period.  Results are modest, with many patients reporting their eyebrows or jowls looking like they did three to four years before the procedure.

Unfortunately, the procedure does not always deliver the desired results.  However, with no down time and no general anesthesia, many patients are willing to try thermage as the only means of forestalling or avoiding a face lift.

The manufacturer has an excellent website which answers many questions about the subject of thermage:
