Tattoo
Removal
Dr. Alan Rosenbach was the first physician to describe the Cold Laser
Tattoo Removal technique. In 2002, Dr. Rosenbach gave a
presentation at the American Society of Lasers in Medicine
conference, demonstrating that combining “forced air cooling” with a
tattoo removal laser allows for higher treatment power
and increased patient safety and comfort. Directing very cold
air at the skin protects the skin surface from overheating while the
laser light penetrates to the tattoo ink. Dr. Rosenbach
combines the laser and forced air cooling for all tattoo removal
procedures.
The first skin cooling techniques (in the 1990s) were crude and used
ice cubes or other cold packs immediately before the laser
treatment. Unfortunately, these older techniques did not
provide consistent results, since some areas of the skin were already warming up in the 30
seconds it might take before the laser reached those areas.
|
Skin cooling has improved tremendously since then. Dr. Rosenbach uses the Zimmer SmartCool™ device,
which acts like a
giant hair blower to direct a very cold rush of
air to a nickel-sized area of the skin. The SmartCool
provides consistent cooling during the laser
treatment, allowing higher laser energies while improving
comfort and safety. |

RevLite Laser

Accolade Laser |
In conjunction with SmartCool,
our office features both state-of-the-art laser types for
treatment of tattoos: the Revlite™ (Hoya ConBio
Company) and the new Accolade™ (Cynosure, Inc.).
The Revlite™ is the new and upgraded version of the older
Medlite C6, which is a popular laser used by many tattoo
removal laser centers. Our other laser, the Accolade™,
was first installed in January, 2009 and is one of the only
Q-switched (fast blinking) Alexandrite lasers in Los
Angeles.
The availability of these two types of tattoo lasers allows
for removal of more colors than ever before.
Treatments are customized depending on the color or colors
of the tattoo. In a single treatment session, both
lasers are lined up side by side so that each can be used
for the individual color or colors for which each laser is
most effective. We feel that having both laser types
available for any treatment session allows for the best
tattoo treatment possible. Only a small number of laser
centers in the U.S. offer this ability to use the two key
laser prototypes in a single session.
An additional feature of these lasers is that they are very
fast, shortening treatment times for each session.
Treatments that used to require an hour only a few years ago
can now be completed in just 10 minutes. The wide
beams on these new lasers allow for more even application of
the laser light, and higher laser power also means fewer
treatments. |
